Built In Wardrobes

in South East London

A bedroom with a bed, a beige and pink blanket, pillows, wooden furniture, a fireplace with a mirror above it, a chair with pillows, and framed wall art.

Fitted or built-in bedroom wardrobes, often double wardrobes in shaker or contemporary style, are frequently constructed on either side of a chimney breast. These wardrobes offer a seamless integration into the room, maximizing storage space without compromising on aesthetics.

In London, built-in wardrobes have been traditionally used in central areas where optimizing space is critical. They're becoming more common in South London, where efficient use of room layout is essential.

We love designing and installing fitted wardrobes as they’re stylish and perfectly suited for various room configurations, especially in older properties with chimney breasts.

Step 1: Agree on The Design, Materials and Quote

  • Initial Consultation: We’ll schedule a meeting to discuss your vision and talk about your ideas and inspiration for the built-in wardrobes.

  • Design Agreement: We’ll collaborate on the design, choosing between a classic shaker or a sleek contemporary style.

  • Material Selection: We’ll discuss the best materials and finishes that match your design preferences and space.

  • Sketch: We’ll sketch out the wardrobes so you can see what they’ll look like.

  • Quote: Based on the size, materials, and layout/components of the fitted wardrobes, we’ll provide a quote and timeline.

Step 2: The Frame and Structure

  • Positioning the Frame: We’ll move the assembled frame into place. Secure it to the wall using brackets or screws for stability.

  • Frame Construction: We will assemble the main frame of the wardrobe using wood glue and screws, and ensure it is square and level.

  • Drawer Construction: We will build the drawers by attaching sides, back, and front panels. We will then install drawer runners on the sides of the drawers and inside the wardrobe.

  • Shaker Doors: We’ll assemble the shaker doors by joining the stiles and rails, and then insert the central panel. Secure with wood glue and clamps until dry.

Step 3: Installing Doors and Drawers and the Finishes

  • Door and Drawer Installation: We’ll then install the shaker doors onto the frame with hinges. Insert the drawers into their respective slots on the slides.

  • Hardware Installation: We will attach handles, hinges, clothes rails, and any other hardware to the doors and drawers.

  • Staining and Sealing or Painting: We will then apply a wood stain to achieve the desired oak finish, followed by a clear sealant to protect the wood. And optionally paint the wardrobes on the outside.

  • Extras: We often install extras like mirrors, LED lights, and plug sockets. We always want to agree on these in advance so we can plan the fitted wardrobes accordingly.

An Example of Bespoke Built In Wardrobes In

South London’s East Dulwich

Above, you can see an example of fitted wardrobes we built in East Dulwich, South East London. We built the wardrobes in oak (veneered MDF for the carcasses and solid oak for the drawers. It’s in a classic shaker design with four shaker doors, three drawers in each cupboard, and a corner storage unit with three drawers and three open shelves. This is for a master bedroom and the client also has LED lights installed and two sets of plug sockets (one inside each wardrobe and one in the side table niche). And sensors to trigger the LED lights when the wardrobes are opened.

The wardrobes were painted to finish with matt black hardware matching the rest of the bedroom. The overall finish is elegant, stylish, and in keeping with the age of the house. The oak interior gives a premium finish and ensures significant durability over painted MDF.

“Dulwich Building Co. did an incredible job of our mansard roof extension in East Dulwich.

Bler and his team completed the project in 12 weeks, even with a couple of unexpected problems with the old roof structure and changes. They were on site every morning on time, kept in budget, and were great communicators. A brilliant experience.”
